Over the weekend...

I started a new project that I can't WAIT to share with you! But for now, the above photo will have to do. Consider it your official sneak peek!

I also took a mini roadtrip to Katy to see THIS GUY RIGHT HERE! Nick is one of my absolute favorite people in the world and um, thank goodness for texts and phonecalls because believe it or not I haven't actually seen him in almost two and a half years. When we met up it was like I had just seen him yesterday, cuz that's just how we roll. PS don't mind the fact that my scanner FAILS at scanning instax polaroids all of a sudden. Hence off-center photo. Also, we kind of fail at making crazy faces right here. Oops. 

Katy Mills Mall has a Gap Outlet (memoriiiiiies *cue sentimental violin music*) so we had to go in there and act a fool because that's where we met when I moved to Austin a few years back. He was my first co-worker turned friend aside from my roommate at the time and is still one of the chillest dudes I know. Like, I'm glad he was there to keep me from folding all the stacks of sweaters and fixing signage. He literally swiped a v-neck outta my hand and some of the ladies passing by looked extremely startled, haha. I DIED. Definitely the icing on the cake of REUNION:TEAM BLASCHKE!  

Also, how great do we look in those glasses? Pretty sure Nero was playin' in the background. Just vibin' the look, yo. It was so great to seein this kid.  

ALSO...we may or may not be in cahoots for a fun art project...but this is early brain-storm phase so I won't spoil ze detailzzz. HAPPY TUESDAY FRAAANS.

I officially dubbed this the "autumn" skirt because "floral/paisley" looks weird, and the print and color pallet basically scream HELLOIAMCHANGINGLEAVES. I thrifted this baby about two years ago, and it's been sitting...and sitting...and sitting, just waiting to be altered. It has an elastic back and no pockets, so all I had to do was take in the sides a bit to bring up the waist, and made it a little shorter. I might still take it up an inch or so, but either way I'm lovin' the newest member of my closet! Dreaming up so many fun fall/winter combos to wear with this thing! 

Oh, and don't mind the tripod shadow or cars in the background. Whatever. 

ANYWAY. I hope you're having an amazing day! I'm off to practice my skirt twirls and camera jumps. 

Introducing a new series!

So I've been toying with this idea for months now, and what better time to launch a sewing series than National Sewing month?! Sorrynotsorry I keep reminding everyone. But seriously. Onetwothreerestyle will be an ongoing series that will include all kinds of sewing projects, from simply spicing up an old garment to altering something thrifted to getting crazy and full-on restyling a piece into something completely different from its original state. Like, pants to shorts or something (crazytown, I know). I'll be using it track my skill progress, push myself to get creative with the clothes I have vs. dropping dollars for new ones, and hopefully give you some fun, crafty ideas to shake up your closet in the process! 

This first post is just about as basic as they come. I took a plain jane cotton dress and handstitched a bit of lace to the collar. That's it. That's all. Quick, easy, and now the dress is a little bit fancier than I found it.

Sewing circle.

There are few people who can do it all. My grandma, I think, is one of them. When people ask me what I want to be when I grow up, I tell them, "Olga Hernandez". 

I'm serious. There's never a shortage of love and laughter around this woman (not to mention amaaazing Cuban cooking and serious trend-setting); this woman who's taught me to value family above all else. She also taught me how to sew. 

I could sit for hours watching her and my great-grandmother sew on the machine or by hand. When I was eight, she gave me fabric scraps to create my very first hand-sewn "quilt" that I took EVERYWHERE. I remember sitting in the lobby before ballet class just stitching away. And while I don't think the quilt ever got as big as I wanted it to be (I had bedspread dreams, just goin for the gold!), I do know that the experience made me want to learn more, do more. Lela was more than thrilled to show me how. And when my great-grandma passed, she gave me the sewing machine they'd bought for her when she finally joined them in the United States in 1972 (and it still works amazingly well). 

Since then I've fallen in and out of love with the craft, never quite mastering it but still enjoying every second I spend in front of a sewing machine. And when I found the Minnesota Model A on my Galveston trip, I died. When my grandma saw it, you can imagine the reaction. Her grandmother had one just like it in Cuba. 

In honor of National Sewing Month (and because restoration of the Minnesota is driving me crazy with excitement, and I just miss sewing in general) I hope to finish a few projects this month, whether that means making a dent in my thrifted 'to be altered' pile, or starting something from scratch. I finally found a flexible pattern that I love...but full credit goes to People Webs for the that because watching her sewing progress (and her crochet projects!) over the years has been such an inspiration. 

And with the help of my ever-enthusiastic Lela, I know it'll happen. PS how babin' is my grandma right now? So incredibly lucky to have this woman in my life as a BLOOD RELATION. She's amazing. You don't even know. 

Minnesota update: I found a leather treadle belt online and fitted it to the machine...it works like a DREAM. I just have to find one more tiny piece and it'll be ready for use! Aaahh! And then maybe I'll find a decent place to photograph it, finally.

National Craft Month Series & DIY Turban Headband.

Hello friends! March is National Craft Month, and if you can’t tell by this massive pile of Joann coupons, I’m super excited. An entire month dedicated to the celebration of all things crafty and handmade?!

Please. I’m SO there.  

Even more exciting? I’ve decided to observe this month by sharing one craft every Monday with you lovely readers! And guess what? The fun starts NOW. March is, after all, four and a HALF weeks long, so why not take advantage of every second for craftastic potential? Without further ado, I'm pleased to present...

I found this great headband tutorial a few weeks ago while perusing one of my favorite reads, A Beautiful Mess. I’ve never been one for bows and headscarves and things, but recently I’ve been in the market for a (cheap!) turban headband I could pair with a lot of my outfits. My reasons being a) they’re supercute, b) I love the 50s vintage look, and c) my hair is getting to that really awkward length and so far this headband is the only thing I can wear to keep it from looking, well, awkward. 

I lovelovelove this pattern because it’s a simple DIY that you can personalize to your style, and it’s so quick to make! I’ve already made way too many in more colors than I need (I'm actually wearing another one in this post too). Note: I didn’t use stretch fabric for mine, but it still works (it just won't be adjustable). Most of mine are actually made from thrifted cotton pillow cases. You just have to try it on before you start sewing the ends together. If you try it out, leave a comment or send a picture! I’d love to see what you come up with! 

This is actually my aunt's dog. We have a dachshund too but he hates the grass, haha.
