Someone still loves you Richard Nixon

My friends know me too well. Also, let's talk about how I entertained the title of this post as the title of this BLOG for about three months. Seriously.

Dear Mr. Nixon:

Oh, pardon (no pun intended)…Mr. President? Must we maintain political formality despite your, shall we say, shrewdly timed resignation? Do doctors uphold their titles post-practice? Can I just call you Richard? Rick? Is that cool man?

PS HAPPY BELATED 100th BIRTHDAY!

Before we get to the meat of it, let’s talk some sun. Desegregation of schools?  Hardly an easy undertaking. High five. Endorsement of the ERA? Sweet deal, even if you were a little late on the bandwagon. (To your credit, you appointed more ladies the administration than our boy LBJ, so, like, madprops or something). You tried to sort out the whole Vietnam debacle, and that had to be more than five kinds of crazy. You did some good in office, ok? Pat on the back. I could go on, lauding your mild achievements and even successes, but that would take more than eighteen and a half minutes and you and I both know we don’t have that kind of time (Rosemary did though? Whatababe). And anyway, that’s not why you’re my favorite president.

Look, I’m not here to bash you. Everyone knows 1972-74 were some of the, erm, trickiest years of your presidential career, save the reelection. That must’ve been quite a thrill. OH but that wasn’t enough. No no. Had to push that envelope. Aaaaand…WATERGATE. I MEAN. I can’t even. A burglary?! A freaking burglary and those meddling Washington Post people and their pornographically nicknamed informant that turned things upside down. Next thing you know there are names and lists and tapes and slush funds…silly goose! That’s exactly what you are.

I won’t bore you with the details as I’m sure you’re more than well acquainted with every single thing, considering you were at the center, scandal plaguing you far beyond your years in office. Probably the rest of your life. Hey, don’t look at me, I wasn’t there. Not even BORN. I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday. Thanks for the good times, and also the infamy of your presidency that will forever run through the veins of America’s political history. Thanks for building some serious trust with the citizens of this country, and then completely destroying it. And lying boldface. You’re a great and terrible man, Dick. You’re a TOTAL crook (don’t let anyone tell you otherwise), a ballsy guy, and have a really awkward/sultry voice (because I definitely don’t listen to your 1969 inaugural address on vinyl every so often, or ever). You crack me up in the best way possible, because who knew a Yorba Linda native would rock a nation with such blatant scandal?

Way to wife that Patty though. I almost changed my name once.
Oh, and Checkers was pretty cute.

Again, happy belated from your most sincere heckler admirer

xo

PS Jimmy Page shares your birthday, except he’s definitely 31 years younger. It’s kind of overwhelming to be alive on January 9th because hello Zeppelin vs . Nixon. WHAT DO I EVEN DO WITH MYSELF?! …I obviously survived though, and have for the past 22 years…I’ll probably just keep doing that. In the meantime, chin up. Or, you know. Don’t turn too much in your grave. No one even talks about it anymore except in American history.

PS again you think the so-called ‘smoking gun’ tape was a big deal? Please. Scandals erupt every day now thanks to these newfangled devices called cellular phones with photo/video taking capabilities, and people post them to the twitters and Youtubes, and get caught. At least you could pretend to be innocent for two years, you smooth criminal.

Defend, against the flux, the sameness of faces.

"Always, I grab it, the writing, hold it to me, defend, defend, against the flux, the sameness of faces".

Yesterday was Sylvia Plath's birthday. That I could have walked with her, talked with her, or known her in the slightest would've been the greatest joy. Countless women have read her work and identified, myself included. Whether it's because she describes the meat of female humanity and madness to such a realistic extent, or because we're relieved to find we're not the only ones suffering or rejoicing in such ways (which is true; we're not the first and won't be the last)...whatever the reason, her words have a deep place in my heart. Happy belated my dear.

"If I sit still and don't do anything, the world goes on beating like a slack drum, without meaning. We must be moving, working, making dreams to run toward; the poverty of life without dreams is too horrible to imagine: it is the kind of madness which is worst: the kind with fancies and hallucinations would be a Bosch-ish relief".

Killer Queen.

1 / 2 / 3
So, I mentioned in a Five Things post awhile back that I want to visit where Freddie Mercury was buried, and how that presents a slight problem because he was cremated. Well. That just goes to show how much I love this man who would have been 66 TODAY.

I was initially drawn to Queen the way many people are- Bohemian Rhapsody is probably the most well-known, catchy song by them besides We Will Rock You and Another One Bites the Dust. I mean. Is there a lyric to any of those songs you DON'T know? Ok maybe. But that's not the point. Beyond the mad crescendos and GalieloGalileos I found something more incredible; the beauty of an idiosyncratic, theatrical band and the man behind the microphone with a vocal range to rival any man (and most women) I know.

I remember a lot of late night art projects with News of The World and Night at the Opera spinning on my record player in highschool. Long roadtrips with nothing but me and Freddie, windows down belting out track after track at the top of our lungs to see who could hold each note the longest. He won every time, duh.

These days I mainly listen to their live concert recordings because um, hello the energy. You can practically taste it, you're so close. It vibes in your bones. Chills to the max.

Ok ALSO, how brilliant a name is Freddie Mercury? I mean. I've never gotten over that. So incredibly fitting for a man who was the center of attention, the main attraction. I guess that's the magic of the whole thing, the charm. When I become a legendary musical powerhouse, I can only hope you guys will give me half that kind of credit. Seriously.

Happy birthday Freddie. You're missed. Also, I'm jealous that my uncle's first concert experience was seeing you live. So you know, maybe come back and play me a song or something. MISSED.

No Country For Old Men.

"A man's at odds to know his mind cuz his mind is aught he has to know it with; he can know his heart, but he don't want to, rightly so. Best not to look in there- it ain't the heart of a creature that is bound in the way God has set for it." -Blood Meridian

This guy.

This guy right here. After reading All the Pretty Horses, I died. And then No Country for Old Men. The Road. Blood Meridian. I just....

THIS GUY RIGHT HERE. I'm no McCarthy expert (but I have a friend who's verifiably infatuated) and so my words fall so short of what could possibly be said about this man I do not know, except through his work. He stole my heart with his use of parataxis, and always will. I can't wait to see The Counselor next year, because I have no idea what a screenplay by him would even look like. Can't even fathom. If you've never read anything by this amazing author, get on it. Like yesterday.

Oh Cormac McCarthy, oh you. Your brilliance will never cease to amaze. A happy birthday to you sir! A happy birthday indeed.

Angelheaded hipster.

Image + really great NYTimes article
I can't even tell you when my love affair with Allen Ginsberg began, junior high maybe, when I first discovered the Beats. Kerouac, Burroughs...their brilliance and beauty and brazen phrases overwhelmed me. America opened my eyes. Howl carved out my heart and ate it for breakfast. I'm with you in Rockland, Carl Solomon! I'm there! I cursed Moloch for a year, swore everything was holy! holy! holy!, ached for those great minds of a generation destroyed by madness...

"who passed through universities with radiant cool eyes
hallucinating Arkansas & Blake-light tragedy
among the scholars of war
who were expelled from the academies for crazy &
publishing obscene odes on the windows of the
skull..."

Happy birthday Allen Ginsberg.
